Splash into Speech and Language
Here in Hoboken, we are lucky enough to experience some splash pad fun!
I recently visited the splash pad in Columbus Park and got to thinking… how about boosting speech and language skills while enjoying the splash pad?
Splash pads aren’t just for cooling off! They’re full of playful opportunities to boost your child’s communication skills! As a pediatric speech-language therapist, I love turning everyday moments into language-rich experiences.
Here’s how you can support speech and language while having fun and staying cool!
1. Model, Move & Talk with Action Words
Narrate what you and/or your child is doing:
• “Jump!”
• “Run!”
• “Spin!”
• “Drip drip drip!”
Pairing movement with language helps toddlers connect words to actions in a natural way.
2. Explore Concepts through Play
Water play is a great chance to introduce early concepts such as:
• “Over” the fountain
• “Under” the water
• “Fast!” or “Slow!”
• “More water!”
• “Turn on! Turn off!”
Label what your child is experiencing in the moment. No quizzing, just comment and join in!
3. Model Simple Phrases
Support expressive language with short, repeatable phrases like:
• “My turn!”
• “Again!”
• “So fun!”
• “All done!”
Model these phrases during natural pauses in play or when taking turns. Keep it light and silly!
4. Take Turns, Take Breaks
Language grows through connection. Take turns running through, splash together, or count down “1,2, 3…GO!” Use the “fill in the blank” strategy and have your child fill in “GO!” during your count down.
The more engaged you are, the more your child will want to communicate with you.
Most importantly, follow their lead and have fun!
If your child wants to kick water or sit and splash, go with it. You don’t need anything more than YOU! Just tune in, join the fun, and sprinkle in language as you go!
